Biographical Information
Victor Séjour (1817-1874) was a free man of color, dramatist, and author from New Orleans. He was born in New Orleans on June 2, 1817 to Louis-Victor Séjour Marcou of Saint-Domingue and Héloïse-Phillippe Ferrand of New Orleans, both free persons of color. He received a private education from Michel Séligny, who was an educator, writer, and the half-brother of author Camille Thierry.</br></br>In 1834, he moved to France, where he befriended Alexandre Dumas. In France, he published the short-story "Le Mulâtre," 23 plays, and one serialized novel, Le Comte de Haag (1872). He died of tuberculosis in Paris on September 20, 1874.

Two French newspapers, L'Autographe (November 1864) and La Presse Illustree (October 1874), with articles concerning Victor Séjour. L'Autographe is a tabloid format newspaper, (numbered 193-200), reproducing excerpts of writings and signatures of famous persons associated with France, including government officials, writers, composers, and others. A brief phrase and autograph of Victor Séjour--described as "un dramaturge sous lequel se cache un véritable auteur dramatique"--is printed on page 195. Other persons represented include Alexandre Dumas Fils, Henri IV of France, Hector Berlioz, and Antoine Étex. The first page of La Presse Illustree includes an illustration of Séjour and his full page obituary. In French.
