Dudley Turnbull and family papers. Bills and receipts. Folder 01-03, 1850-1879.
Biographical Information
Dudley Turnbull (approximately 1852-1926) was a free man of color who lived in Baton Rouge and worked as a steamboat watchman and worked in restaurants and eating houses. In 1873, he married Rosemarie Aldometer Mather (1851-1917) (often found as Aldometer, or Aldameda), who was born a free woman on color and worked as a homemaker in the Turnbull household. Aldometer was the daughter of George Mather and Jane Giddings (born about 1830, often referred to as Jane Giddens or Giddins), who were both free people of color of Baton Rouge. Though Jane Giddings and George Mather married in 1851, Jane continued to use her maiden name throughout most of her life. It is probable that Jane and Aldometer lived independently of George Mather. Dudley and Aldometer Turnbull had six children: John (1874-1939), a bricklayer; George Arthur (1877-1948, often goes by Arthur), a graduate of New Orleans University who settled in Chicago and married Mabel; Estelle ("Stella," born about 1880); Dudley, Jr. (born 1891); Warren; and Maudie (born about 1886), a Catholic nun who went by the name Sister Mary Cornelia.
