Biographical Information
Rose was a free woman of color who lived in the city of New Orleans. She worked as a washerwoman in the Hospital for General Coffees' Brigade.</br></br>Andrew Jackson was a soldier, an army general, and the president of the United States from 1829 to 1837. He was born in Waxhaw, South Carolina on March 15, 1767 to Andrew Jackson and Elizabeth Hutchinson. During the War of 1812, he was commissioned by the federal government to be major general of volunteers and was then appointed major general of the U. S. Regular Army on May 28, 1814. He marched with his soldiers to New Orleans (arrived December 2, 1814) to prepare defenses against British invasion. In addition to regular troops, he gathered militia from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi, as well as free people of color and other volunteers from Louisiana. His victories at New Orleans made him a national hero. He was elected president in November of 1828 and was reelected in 1832. From 1832-1835, he instituted a policy of Indian removals that resulted in the forced relocation of many Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole from the South to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma). He died at his plantation, ""The Hermitage,"" near Nashville, Tennessee on June 8, 1845.</br></br>David C. Ker (1722-1840) was a hospital surgeon of the United States Army who fought under General Sir Edward Pakenham in the Battle of New Orleans and a physician. He was appointed as a visiting physician at New Orleans Charity Hospital in 1827 and was a state vaccine agent, charter member of the Physico-Medical Society, and an attending physician at Charity Hospital.

Cobb, a surgeon in the 2nd Regiment of Tennessee Militia, certifies that Rose is entitled to be paid 10 dollars for the month, and the claim is attested to by David C. Ker, a hospital surgeon for the U.S. Army. Endorsed by Major General Andrew Jackson.
