Biographical Information
Marie Jeanne Lemelle (active 1772-1833) was a free woman of color, plantation owner, and slave owner of New Orleans and Opelousas district, Louisiana. The certificate describes her as a cateronne. She was manumitted from slavery in New Orleans on December 5, 1772 after which she adopted the surname Lemelle. She was the placée of François Lemelle, fils, the son of a prominent St. Charles Parish planter by the same name. With him, she had at least three sons and three daughters: François, Louis, Hildebert, Jacqueline, Catherine, and Julie. After her husband's death in 1789, she settled in Isle L'Anglois in Bayou Teche, St. Landry Parish, where she cultivated and built upon land she had acquired from him.
