Biographical Information
Andrew Durnford (1800-1859) was a free person of color and slaveholder who owned the St. Rosalie Plantation in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Rosaline Mercier, a free woman of color, and Thomas Durnford, a white merchant. When Thomas died, the curatorship of his estate fell to his friend, John McDonough, who subsequently became Andrew's business associate and mentor. Andrew married Marie Charlotte Remy, a free woman of color; their children were Thomas, Rosema, and Andrew, Jr.

Memorandum book of Andrew Durnford, a free man of color, in which he records the supplies he purchased and the names of his suppliers, notes credits and debts incurred by enslaved persons, and records his daily activities.
