Biographical Information
John Jones (flourished 1853) was a free man of color, property owner, and former slave owner of New Orleans.; William Henry Hunt was an attorney, politician, and public official born in Charleston, S. C. on June 12, 1823. He was the son of Thomas Hunt I of Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, and Louisa Gaillard. He married four times: Frances Ann Andrews (1848); Elizabeth Augusta Ridgely (1852), Sarah Barker Harrison (1866), and Louise F. Hopkins (1871). He practiced law in New Orleans from 1844 to 1878; was an associate judge for the U. S. Court of Claims from 1878 to 1881; was secretary of navy from 1881 to 1882; and was envoy and minister plenipotentiary to Russia from April 12, 1882 until he died on February 27, 1884.

Letter by William H. Hunt, New Orleans, to Hon. Mr. Crossman, Mayor, asking that he furnish John Jones, a free man of color, with the document he desires: a certificate he formerly held from the office of the mayor. Hunt states that Jones is a man of good character and the owner of considerable property.
