John and Jean Rousseau collection, 1814-1838.
Biographical Information
Jean Rousseau (active 1814-1833) and his wife Jeanne Marie Mallet (died 1828) were French-speaking, free people of color, property owners, and slave owners who lived in New Orleans. Jeanne Marie, Bernard, and Marie Antoine were the children of Augustin Mallet and Hyacinthe Demazilieres (both free people of color). Jean and Jeanne Marie had seven children: Joseph, Eliacinthe, Roussoline, Doralice, Lancelin, Jean, and Therese Lucette Rousseau.

Description
Includes legal documents regarding the purchase and ownership of enslaved persons, tutorship or guardianship of the Rousseau children after their mother's death, and statements of the separate and joint assets of Jean Rousseau and Jeanne Marie Mallet, both free people of color. Also included are Jean's registration of a property purchase on Bourbon St. and a power of attorney in which he grants his wife full authority to act on his behalf during his absence.
