Biographical Information
Marie Rose Metoyer was a free woman of color born in 1792 to Louis Metoyer (1770-1832), a former enslaved person, and Marie Thérèze Lecomte, of full or partial Native American ancestry who was born an enslaved person into the LeCourt family. She married Jean Baptiste Balthazar-Monet with whom she had two children: Louis (1807-1853) and Rose.</br></br>Joseph François Metoyer (1810-1883) was a landowner and free man of color born to François Metoyer (1784-1862), a free man of color, and Marguerite Lafantasy, a half-French, former enslaved person. Marguerite's sister, Marie Agnes Poissot, was married to François's brother, Nicolas Augustin, a founder of the Cane River settlement. Joseph François married Marie Désirée Coton-Maïs, and the couple had at least two daughters, Estelle (1830-1854) and Louisiana Metoyer (1834).</br></br>Louis Amadée Morin (1800-1844) was a free man of color and property owner who was born in New Orleans to Louis Morin and Mme. Sanitte. He married Marie Suzanne ""Suzette"" Metoyer, a free woman of color (1806-1872) and the daughter of Marie Agnes Poissot (1769-1839), a half-French, former enslaved person, and Nicolas Augustin (1768-1856) a former enslaved person, slave owner, and founder of the Cane River colony.

Description
Mostly undated legal and financial records including account sheets, inventories, testimonies, court records, and letters, ranging in date from approximately 1817 to 1871. Items relating to free people of color include an authorization given by Louis Morin to his wife, Marie Suzette Metoyer, for the partial lifting of a mortgage; a testimony of Francois Metoyer, fils, in an affair between Athanasse Denis and Mr. Helysse; and a statement of debts owed by Rose Metoyer to Dr. A. Douglas. The bulk of the items are in French.
