Biographical Information
Joseph François Metoyer (1810-1883) was a landowner and free man of color born to François Metoyer (1784-1862), a free man of color, and Marguerite Lafantasy, a half-French, form enslaved person. Marguerite's sister, Marie Agnes Poissot, was married to François's brother, Nicolas Augustin. Joseph François married Marie Désirée Coton-Maïs. The couple had at least two daughters, Estelle (1830-1854) and Louisiana Metoyer (1834).</br></br>Janvier St. Andre was a free man of color born in 1827 to Onesime St. Andre and Susanne St. Andre.</br></br>Augustin Maximin Metoyer (1819-1884) was a free man of color and member of the Cane River Colony. He was the son of Marie Aspasie Anty and her first-cousin, Jean Baptiste Maxille Metoyer, both free people of color. Maxille was the son of Nicolas Augustin Metoyer (1768-1856) and Marie Agnes Poissot; Marie Aspasie was the daughter of Marie Suzanne Metoyer (Nicolas Augustin's twin sister) and Jean Baptiste Anty, all founders of the Cane River colony. Augustin Maximin married Marie Celina Metoyer (1822-1871?), the daughter of Antoine Metoyer (brother to Nicolas Augustin and Marie Suzanne) and Marie LeCourt. Their children were Menizle Zon (1845-1918), Eulalie Magdalene (1850-1931), Pelagie A. (born 1852), Clotilde (born 1854), Auguste (born 1864), Marie Leda (born 1867), Elbert (born 1869), and Frank (born 1870).</br></br> Charles Nerestan Rocques (1797-1859) was a free man of color and native of New Orleans who became a planter and merchant in Natchitoches Parish. He was the son of Pierre Rocques, a white man, and Lisette Glapion, a free woman of color. In 1818, he married Marie Pompose Metoyer, the daughter of Nicolas Augustin Metoyer (1768-1856) and Marie Agnes Poissot. The couple had a son named Charles Nerestan Rocques, Jr. (born 1819). In the 1820s, he formed the first merchant firm in Isle Brevelle with Auguste Metoyer (1800-1862) and Jerome Sarpy, which operated under the name, Rocques, Sarpy & Company.

Legal and financial papers including summons, land sales, verdicts, account sheets, proxy appointments, and collection orders dated 1852. Papers relating to free people of color include a land sale and renunciation of matrimonial rights by Auguste Maximin and Celina Metoyer; verdicts and collection orders regarding the debts of Janvier St. Andre; an order given by the justice of the peace to collect money owed by Francois Metoyer, fils [Joseph Francois?]; and the removal of Charles Nerestan Rocques' mortgage. The bulk of the items are in French.
