Description
Double portrait miniature of Reverend William Turnbull and Jacob Turnbull set into a pendant. Piece is composed of two portraits held in an oval brass frame which is ribbed on the inner most edges and decorated with flowers and foliage around the edges. The frame is topped by a matching loop from which the miniature could be hung. Reverend William R. Bowman (1800-1835), rector of Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville, Louisiana, is depicted in his vestments in front of a red cloth and window. William R. Bowman was the father of James Pirrie Bowman who married Sarah Turnbull (and is depicted in the portrait numbered CIS-2011-0043). His features are finely painted and detailed. The reverse depicts William's brother, Jacob Bowman and does not appear to have been painted by the same hand. Jacob is depicted in front of an abstract background evoking the sky and landscape.
