Description
Grecian plain style chest of drawers. The mahogany veneered chest has four drawers with the uppermost drawer appearing integral to the case body. Three smaller graduated drawers with mahogany pulls have cock bead decoration applied to the top and bottom of the drawers with iron tacks. The double cyma molded top drawer face is half-blind dovetailed while the remaining joints are open dovetailed. The base is dadoed into the side rails and the drawer front. The base of the drawer is nailed to the rear rail with three nails. Original locks are half mortised into drawer fronts. Each of the four drawers is composed of a poplar back and base and pine front and side rails. The back of the piece is paneled with three pine rails mortised, tenoned and pinned into poplar styles. The two pine panels are rabbeted into the rails and are chamfered on the interior. Vertical mill saw marks are visible on back panels. The sides are composed of two mahoganized poplar rails that are mortised and tenoned into two poplar stiles. The central poplar panel is dadoed into the rails and styles and chamfered on the interior. Each front foot is composed of two pieces of poplar laminated together with the entire front of the piece is veneered in mahogany. The sides and top are poplar and stained to look like mahogany. The front feet are C-scrolls with an S-scroll detail above. White pine drawer runners are mortised and tenoned into the front and rear styles with a strip of white pine nailed to the rail to create a drawer runner. The front rails are mortised and tenoned into the front two styles. The top rail is mahoganized pine while the subsequent rails are white pine with mahogany veneer. Two segments cut from the rail allow the top drawer to be opened. The three bottom drawers have drawer stops nailed to the rails. The mahogany veneer is book-matched on all four drawers. The top is held on by screws set into the back and side rails of the case.
