Description
Mahogany-veneered chest with mirror. The back of the chest is paneled with two panels and three stiles mortised and tenoned into a back rail secured to the case in an unknown manner. The base is four rails that are glue blocked in the corners and in the front have an extra two glue blocks secured to the feet. The base is two long rails with two side rails mortised and tenoned into them. The bottom drawer bottom sits on top of that and the rails are glue blocked to the skirt. The sides are paneled with two stiles with two rails mortised and tenoned into them, side panel dadoed into the rails and stiles. The drawer blade is one board that is the front rail of the base. A drawer guide is nailed to the side rails on either side. There are four drawers. The drawers are composed of four rails, the front rails is curved. The front are half blind dovetailed, the back is dovetailed and the base is dadoed in. The drawer pulls are applied and tacked, round, turned elements with a turned escutcheon. The drawers have original half mortised locks, except for the bottom drawer which is missing the lock. The drawer blades are rounded and the drawer rails are located on the side of the case and mortised and tenoned to the front rail and secured in front and behind. The drawer guides are tacked into the rails. The top drawer is shallower than the other three drawers and has dividers placed in it to divide the space horizontally and vertically. Four corner stiles support a paneled wood top that supports the marble top. The exterior decoration is carved and tacked on. The entire piece sits on four original brass casters. The mirror rests in a dado and is a half round at the top with four rails mortised and tenoned together creating the frame. It is secured to a body that is two side stiles and a top crest rail with a screw and a wooden finial on the other side of the stiles. The crest rails has applied carving, including a broken pediment and a cartouche. The stiles terminate at the base in plinths that are built up with moldings and presumably doweled into the marble top.
