Description
Bookcase over two-drawer chest. The bookcase sits into a molding that is tacked onto the top of the chest. The sides, base and top of the case are likely dovetailed together. The front stiles are secured to the sides of the case and the corners are rounded. The back is paneled. The bookshelves rest on two stiles that are nailed to either side of the case. The stiles have triangular cutouts and strips of wood, mitered at the end, fit into these and hold the shelves. There are five shelves; two are original with rounded fronts and three are replaced. The glazed doors each have five panels and rest on three brass butt hinges apiece. The original brass lock is mortised into the proper left. Each door has two stiles with two rails mortised and tenoned into them. Four muntins are dadoed into the side rails. Original brass escutcheon on the proper left. The muntins are half rounds on the exterior. The cornice is a large Grecian double cyma that likely rests on the top. Two square post feet are attached to a single board that forms the base. The two rear feet are secured to two side rails, one on either side, and glue blocked and nailed to that rail. The back feet have a decorative molding applied just to the side to create the look of a bracket foot. The side rails are secured to the front feet, that are roughly molded to the shape of the decorated front. The decorative molding is applied to the side and front of the front feet and glue blocked in. The body of the two-drawer chest's case is composed of two sides that are mortised and tenoned into the top board and the bottom board. Each side has a stile that forms the sides beyond the drawers and the corners are curved. The drawer blade is secured to the sides and to the stiles in an unknown fashion. The drawer rests on two drawer supports and two rails. The rails form a guide for the drawers. The baseboard is yellow pine. The bottom drawer had two drawer guides that are strips of poplar nailed in place, one is out of place and the other is missing but remnants survive. There are two drawer stops for each drawer which are made of a strip of wood and tacked on. The top is two rails that go from side to side with intermediate rails between them. The backboard of the case is nailed on. The top is secured in an unknown manner. There is a cyma molded base rail that is tacked and glue blocked. The molding profile between the top and the case body is tacked on. The two drawers are composed of half blind dovetails in the front, dovetailed in the back, and the base is dadoed in. The original locks are half mortised into the front. The drawer fronts are veneered. Four original cast iron casters (with two wheels contained in each caster) remain.
