Description
Bookcase with two full-length doors. The case consists of four tulip poplar boards butt joined and nailed together. The back is six vertical poplar boards tongue and groove joined. The four original poplar shelves are nailed through the exterior of the case. A molded frame with a single bead is applied to the exterior front of the case. The two rails of the single architrave are joined into the two stiles. A beaded profile is nailed and mitered to the side and top. The bottom rail is molded to create bracket feet. Each door hangs on two original iron butt hinges and consists of four pieces of poplar tongue and grooved together with a single bead on the interior and exterior. Two rails are added to either door and are chamfered and screwed into the pieces of wood. The original iron lock survives on the proper right door while a wooden latch survives on the interior of the proper left door. A central wooden stile with a bead on either side divides the two doors and is nailed to the case and to the shelves. The two exterior stiles of the case are cut with a segmental arch to create bracket feet on the sides. The entire exterior surface is covered with an old, probably original, red paint.
