Description
Mahogany bookcase converted from an armoire. The case is either half-blind or blind dovetail construction. The back boards are rabbeted in and nailed to the sides of the case. The doors have two stiles and are mortised and tenoned into their rails and originally had glazed doors composed of twenty panes of glass per door. There are tack holes on the interior of the door suggesting that there would have been a curtain behind the glass. The dadoes for the muntins are still visible indicating the presence of glazed doors. There are V notches in the applied bead that surrounds the glazed interior. Each door sits on three original brass hinges. The lock is cast brass and is mortised into the door frame. The latch is missing from the proper right door. The escutcheon on the proper left door is original. The piece has adjustable shelves that are set on two stiles on either side. The stiles have triangular cutouts into which a loose shelf support is set. The shelf sits on a rabbet in the shelf support. There appear to be at least three original shelves currently in the piece. The base has a front rail that extends the width of the piece. The two side rails are mortised and tenoned into the front rail. The rear rail is mortised and tenoned into the side rails. All four feet are composed of two pieces of laminated wood that are turned and bolted through the center to the base and into the bottom of the case. The cornice consists of four rails joined together in an unknown manner with four glue blocks, one in each corner, through which a screw is inserted from the interior of the case to hold the piece together. There is a quirk molding that is mitered together in three pieces and nailed to the top of the cornice. On top, the projection of the cornice consists of three pieces of wood mitered together and nailed to the molding and the cornice. There is an applied cock bead that separates the case from the cornice.
