In stencil on the reverse proper left corner of the portrait reads: "Prepared by F. Hegan, Louisville, Kentucky." On reverse, proper left corner: "1841".
Accessories/Hardware
Frame possibly original.
Condition
Overall fair condition. Tear in the lower proper right corner of the canvas- goes all the way through. Craquelature on the surface of the painting overall. Some rings indicating impact points especially on the forehead of sitter.

Description
Portrait of Ayres Phillips Merrill, M.D. (1798-1873) seated in an armchair with red upholstery against a dark background. Evidence of backing paper on the sides of the frame. Possibly an old frame. The back has been placed on a new stretcher. On lower proper right and lower corners canvas has been added.

This portrait belonged to the descendants of Dunbar Merrill, one of the sons of Ayres and Jane Surget Merrill of Natchez, Mississippi, until it was purchased by the current owners in 2010.
