Description
Chest refrigerator painted with a dark brown/black paint and with hinged top still possessing original hinges but reinforced with modern hinges. The overall construction consists of a case nailed together, possibly with half-blind dovetails behind a simple, unembellished strip. A molding, unembellished aside from a slight chamfer on the top edge, is nailed around the front and sides at the bottom of the case, which rests on two boards that attach it to four turned feet consisting of a disc, neck, and terminating in a large ball. Each side of the case includes an indentation for a handle surrounded by a small strip of beaded molding. A stenciled inscription identifying the maker as John C. Schooley of Cincinnati, Ohio is centered on the outside of the case's back board. An interior case is divided unequally into two zinc-lined chambers with a vent cut through the dividing wall near the bottom, allowing air to pass through both chambers. Each chamber has sheet zinc tacked around the inside and has shelf supports to allow for zinc-covered shelves to be moved and adjusted. Each chamber has a hinged lid, a small brass ring pull, and a lock. The interior lids and underside of the top are painted a lighter brown and may be grain-painted to resemble a smooth, close-grained wood.
