Description
Set of six fancy chairs, each having a tablet back with scrolled rail rising over two turned stiles with a lower back rail. Stiles insert into a sweeping side seat rail that flares outward forming a trapezoidal seat. The seat is caned using the original holes, but is likely a later campaign. The four turned legs are tenoned and glued into the seat and connected by forward, rear and side stretchers. The back legs have a circular cross section, taper slightly at either end and rake backward from the seat. The front legs include ring turnings and a cap just under the join to the seat. The front stretcher has four ring turnings at its center. Stenciled and painted decoration appears on multiple elements of the chair over a dark paint. Each splat includes a different pastoral scene outlined with a band of gilding with groups and individuals participating in leisure activities like fishing, walking, etc. These areas are only partially visible due to darkening over time. A foliate motif is painted onto the front of each stile where it joins the lower back rail, which is decorated with a painted central anthemion surrounded by floral and foliate motifs all surrounded by a thin gilded band. More thin gilded bands highlight the lines of the seat along with a repeat of the design from the lower back rail painted onto the front seat rail. On the right and left side of the seat where it joins the stiles there is a red-brown painted scroll motif. There is a foliage and swag design painted on the front of the two front legs of each chair.
