Description
China press with ogee and angled cornice surmounting top case with three adjustable shelves held in place by toothed stiles. Back of case is made of two boards and a central stile. Two glazed doors with geometric munions with central octagon. Projecting lower case with bank of three drawers, with two wide drawers flanking a square central drawer. Supported by two turned columns resting on the base of lower case. Between the two columns are two deep, narrow central drawers enclosed by a full board on either side. The boards separate the drawers from storage spaces to each side which are enclosed by two doors. Base rests on four turned legs with upper swell, centered neck and compressed ball feet. All pulls are turned cherry. Front show surfaces all veneered with mahogany. Drawer fronts are cut and veneered with chamfered edges. Bottom board of some drawers retain choppy, cut surfaces.

Purchased by the current owners at auction on November 11 or 12th of 2001. Originally from the estate of Dr. James A. Ussery of Courtland, Alabama. A Courtland pamphlet said that Mrs. Ussery was a descendant of John M. Swoope.
