Description
Set of two oak gothic revival style hall chairs each topped with central trilobate finial on a spire with crocketts. Three crocketts are applied along the outer length of each span of a pointed gothic arch that forms the crest rail of the stand. The crest is constructed using two pieces of oak . The back is designed with a two quatrefoil medallions and interlacing tracery. The two stiles take the form of spires and are also capped by crocketts. Pierced tracery runs the length of each stile. Back splat is pegged to stiles. The seat is hinged with a glove well. Seat rails have blind tracery. A strip of pierced tracery appears along the front rail in a 1976 publication (Gothic Taste in America, 29), but the chair has subsequently undergone a poor restoration that replaced the remnants of the original and added a like pattern under the side rails. It is unclear if the chairs originally had this detail under the side rails. The replacement tracery with 5 arches may not accurately replicate the number of arches on the original. The replacement tracery, which is nailed to the rails, is painted black and distressed. The front leg carries through the design of the stiles. The chair has ogee back legs.
