Description
Three-quarter tester bed with curvilinear tester embellished with cornice including two bands of quarter round separated by a molding of repeated balls and disks or dashes. A central robust, carved motif of a central cabochon with band diagonally across it surrounded by acanthus leaves, C-scrolls and S-scrolls is applied to the top of the tester in the center. Sitting on each rounded corner on the top of the tester are two multi-lobed finials with a thin extension upward terminating in a disc and cap. The bottom of the tester is currently upholstered in a modern cream-colored textile in a pattern with a central circle and four fields of tufted textile. A modern cream-colored woven gimp is tacked to the outside of the tester. Two carved brackets with an incorporated C-scroll, applied foliate decoration and rosewood grain painting are screwed into the tester on one end and the bed posts on the other, providing added strength. All four posts are likely walnut with rosewood veneer and are composed of four columns assembled together into what would form a quatrefoil cross section. The full posts surrounding the headboard each have a capital with volutes, acanthus leaf carving and floral motifs. The headboard, likely walnut with rosewood veneer, is composed of a central shaped panel surrounded by beading and a shaped border of a few inches wide. There are rosewood grain-painted elements applied to the top front edge of the headboard with a carved motif matching that on the top of the tester. On top of the quatrefoil posts at the foot of the bed, both of which conceal extendable poles for supporting mosquito netting, are four carved S-scrolls and a disc-like quarter round supporting a multi-lobed finial which is the top of the poles. The foot rail and side rails include applied, carved foliate motifs on the edges and a central motif with grapes surrounded by a cartouche-like design.
