Description
Four-arm counterweight gasolier chandelier with molded and applied foliate, grotesque and strap work motifs. Fixture is suspended from chain covered in a pressed metal cover. The lighting element can be raised and lowered by adjusting the four cast pomegranate counterweights. These slide over four associated wheels with central rosettes. The crest of the gasolier is formed by calla lily like flowers and leaves, all screwed onto the substructure. The central located basin appears to be draped with grape leaves and drop pendants, which are also screwed onto the armature. A two tier drop pendant caps the bottom of the central basin. Inside the basin are the terminals of the four arms that originally connected to the gas source. The arms extend outward in a gentle "S" curve cast with leaves and a dragon or dolphin element. At the lowest point on each arm a shield shaped gas spigot is incorporated. The piece likely had four globe shades, these were replaced by open shades in the 1970s.
