Description
Late classical style armoire having a mahogany veneer cornice with slightly angled top level over a cyma reversa molding. Cornice surmounts a wide, shallow arch that stretches over the two paneled doors. Solid mahogany frame members encase mahogany veneered panels. Center cross member is also mahogany veneer. Panels are decoratively veneered with highly figured central section framed by 1.33" of veneer in a contrasting grain. Corners are formed by two wedges of veneer forming a quarter round element. Iron lock with brass keyhole secures the doors, possibly replaced. Doors are flanked by mahogany veneer half columns in the Doric manner. Columns rest on a rectangular base and robust, slightly conical, feet. All four feet are identical. Interior divided into two equal portions by vertical board. Both surmount a bank of two drawers with replaced brass hardware. Proper right side retains an upper tier of nine turned mahogany pegs (one is missing) and a lower tier of another 10 identical pegs. Proper left side is set with four drawer-like shelves that rest upon battens and cannot be removed due to the configuration of the case.
