Description
Three-quarter length portrait of Hulda Laura Helm Stanton (1807-1893), wife of Frederick Stanton, originally of Versailles, Kentucky. She is depicted with dark hair parted down the center and wearing a lace cuff, seated on a upholstered red stuffed and tufted chair. She sits against a dark brown background. The sitter is seated towards the center of the portrait, the front of her body facing the proper left side of the canvas. She gazes out at the viewer. She wears a rounded lace color and a black dressing gown (or jacket) with wide sleeves with lace cuffs at the cuffs. Her proper right hand is clutched in a loose fist, and in her proper left hand, she holds a feathered fan with a star on the handle where the feathers are attached. The red chair is depicted behind the woman with a curved back and with tufted upholstery. Small vines appear either unfinished or as part of an earlier version of the portrait in the area of the chair, along the proper left edge of the portrait. In wooden and gilded frame with plaster composite decorative motifs. The frame has molding composed of banded foliate and fruit motifs. Each corner has an abstracted anthemion/acanthus/scallop shell decoration. The cornice is composed of a double acanthus leaf over a scalloped decoration over the bust of a female figure whose arms extend into foliate C-scrolls.
