Marks/Inscription/Labels
Paper label, signed in ink on the interior of the case. Just visible through the space left by the extant oval medallion on the back of the case. The paper reads: "Painted by John Wood Dodge/April 2, 1839/Huntsville, Alabama/ Likeness of Mrs. Susan B. Gee".
Accessories/Hardware
Gold case and leather covered wooden case lined with velvet.
Condition
Overall good condition. The painted ivory is in good condition. Several accretions on the proper right side of the sitter. At one time two strips of scotch tape were placed in an 'X' across the now missing medallion on the back of the miniature. Slight tarnish on the gold bale. The tape has eroded the surface minimally and the residue appears a darker, orange color. The case is in good condition, maintaining its original hinge. Some of the leather is worn away from the sides. A section of the wood is missing from the upper proper left corner of the case. The velvet is worn from use and the miniature has left an impression on the cover side of the case. The case had two hinges, one now missing.

Description
Oval portrait miniature on ivory of a Susan B. Gee in a gold case with bale. The miniature and case are housed in a leather covered embossed case, lined with brown (on the lid side) and green (on the case side) velvet, and would have had two hinges. A space has been carved out for the miniature. The sitter is set against a pale greyish blue background. She has black hair, parted at the sides, with shoulder-length curls. She wears a white transparent collar edged with lace and a black garment with sloping shoulders. The oval portrait is placed in an oval frame made of gold with an articulated bale. The bale has a small round knop and graduated decoration. It is hinged to the top of the gold case. A small rope-like recessed border surrounds the inner edge of the frame. The reverse of the case has been engraved in a blurred chevron pattern, with central basket weave radiating from a smaller oval at the lower part of the case. An oval has been cut out from the lower center of the case. This held a medallion insert.
