Wooden frame, likely replaced in the late nineteenth century. The edges are molded with ebonized borders. The corners of the frame are decorated with modified fleur-de-lis motifs with gilded borders.
Surface Treatments
Modern surface coating. Original surface visible with minor florescence.
Condition
Overall good condition. Severe cupping and friable paint on the proper left shoulder of the sitter. Sections of paint on the upper proper right hand corner of the portrait are starting to pull away from the canvas. The portrait has been conserved, possibly in the third quarter of the twentieth century. The back of the portrait has been covered with paper. The mate to this portrait appears to have been removed from the stretcher and put on Masonite.

Description
Oval half portrait of an older woman against a dark brown background. The sitter looks directly at the viewer. She wears a lace or whitework bonnet tied around her chin with a green ribbon with a central lighter green stripe, decorated with red lines. A ribbon of the same color is tied at her temple. She has large blue eyes and a hint of silver hair at her forehead. Around her neck she wears a white lace or embroidered collar pinned with an oval, gold brooch with a black polished stone or glass. She wears a black shawl with fringe and a black dress. In her proper left hand, she holds an open brown book.
