Description
Half-length portrait of a dark-haired woman in a white dress. She gazes directly out at the viewer and has dark eyes and hair parted down the center, with cascading ringlets to her shoulders. She wears a gown that is across the shoulders with open cap sleeves with lace trim. The neckline of the dress is cinched at the top and at the waist. A translucent pink shawl drapes from her proper right elbow around her back around to her front where it rests under her proper right arm. Around her neck she wears a gold chain, with bale and gold watch. On her proper right hand she wears four gold rings and a gold bracelet with a red jewel setting. She wears long dangling earrings, only the earring to her proper right is visible. She rests her proper left elbow on a table draped with a blue cloth on which sits an open book, turned to reveal its spin and cove. The portrait appears to be in within its original stretcher. The sides of mitered corners of the stretcher are jibbed with modern clothes-pins to prevent the canvas from sagging. On the upper left hand side of the canvas, there is an inscription in black wax pencil. The frame is beveled in towards the stretcher. Two eye hooks with hanging wire. The frame appears to be pine, with cherry stretchers.
