Description
Ambrotype in rectangular frame. Within the center frame, a chased and engraved copper plate creates an oval frame for the portrait of a man. The bearded man (possibly Lenox Surget of Natchez, Mississippi) is seated, facing the camera, with his arms resting in his lap; hands proper right over left. The proper right elbow juts out. He wears a jacket and a stripped cravat. His hair is parted at the center, with two curled plaits on each side. The mat consists of a copper foil inset with faceted edges and framed by a braided pattern. An inset of tan silk velvet holds the mat and image into the wooden and leather case. The leather case is embossed and gilded in a weaving vine pattern. The other side of the case is decorated with a piece of pink silk velvet and embossed with velvet with rocaille floral designs. The outside of the case is embossed with raised decoration of intertwining flowers around a central decorative motif. The corners are decorated with impressed with gold decoration. The picture side and the lid are attachable using the clasps (picture side) and the loops (on the lid).
