Description
Cherry armoire or wardrobe in three sections: base, case body and cornice. Case can also be divided, with a central compartment consisting of multiple drawers and shelves, and two full-length side cabinets on either side. Side cabinets not available for inspection. Interior case sides likely half-blind dovetailed into boards at bottom and top. Back of panel and stile construction; vertical cypress stiles are double-tenoned into horizontal rails, suspending the panels. Construction continues along entire back; side cabinets hide part of the panels. Interior fitted with several types of shelving. Tulip poplar battens nailed into sides of upper case likely held freestanding shelves, now missing. Belt of three side-by-side drawers occupy middle of case, suspended by drawer blades sliding-dovetailed into sides of case. Drawers fronted with cherry, with tulip poplar sides, back and bottom. Bottoms beveled and tongue and grooved into sides, and secured with nails at back. Central drawer bears a brass keyhole escutcheon, while flanking drawers bear replaced brass ovular pulls, both replaced. Three sliding textile shelves below waist-drawers, with similar wood arrangement as latter. Sides cut in rising S-curve pattern. Shelves suspended with battens as above. Cherry double-paneled doors hide interior, secured by locks above and below. Locks missing on proper left-hand door. Doors suspended by replaced brass butt hinges. Front of doors visually separated by application of figured-cherry veneers, mimicking paneled construction. Stacked twisted columns with spool-turned capitals and plinths frame doors/provide visual integration to feet and corner-finials. Case set into base. Front and back boards of base likely dovetailed into the sides. Veneer hides construction details. Modern screws secure case into base at front. Turned feet resemble downward tapering beehive above a compressed ball, dovetailed into the bottom of base. Freestanding cornice comprised of full S-scrolls terminating in a broken-arch pediment at center. Doweled, elongated spear-point finial tops applied tympanum carving, comprised of hatchwork below two diagonal cross-bands. Squat beet finials doweled into veneered corner-plinths.
