Description
Washstand or commode with continuous stiles square in section but with rounded outer profile below lid concealing chamber pot. Above simple tuscan capital stiles have rounded rear profile (U-shaped). Cabinet section below columns has rails that tenon into stiles in which float solid walnut panels. This section holds drawer on small runners nailed into sides. Drawer front of walnut, sides and back of white pine, bottom of three-ply pine laminate, all butt or lap jointed and secured with modern steel nails. Pot was suspended on tulip poplar board nailed into sides of rails. Lid for chamber pot has notches cut out of corners of frame rails to conform to profile of case stiles, and accommodate rails supporting hinged surface above when lifted. Hinged surface paneled and joined by mortise and tenon frame on all sides with rounded profile. Turned walnut pull with iron round-head slotted screw (likely not original); possibly that the entire drawer has been fabricated. Virtually no wear, all solid and flat construction, use of nails, etc.
