Description
The sword has a silver and ivory hilt with a cast silver eagle head with a laurel wreath in its mouth supporting a scrolled acanthus leaf handle with classical figures set in a laurel leaf border in the handle. A classical motif is cast into the finger guard with eagle heads at the top and Hermes on the one side and a flying figure on the other. Athena and (probably) Liberty flank Zeus. The ivory is carved with a diaper pattern. The blade is etched with foliate motifs and scrolls. The scabbard is iron with two bands and a knob that hold rings to hold the sword to the belt.

Provenance
Judge Samuel McCutcheon Lawrason's sword that he carried in Robert E. Lee's funeral, in which he was a member of the honor guard. Lawrason attended Washington and Lee and later Virginia Military Institute. He was a cadet at VMI when the funeral took place in 1870. Pictures exist of him as young man in his VMI uniform with a sword.
