Chest 1133.1: "?? N ? 8 9" inscribed in graphite on upper rear case rail. "1" inscribed also in graphite on same rail in proper right corner. "3" in proper left corner. "L" in brownish crayon on proper right upper drawer blade. "R" on opposite side on drawer blade. "L (?) N (?) 8" on drawer bottoms, in crayon, proper upper right. "R N 2" on proper upper left drawer bottom. "N 1 6" in graphite on bottom of upper graduated drawer. Indecipherable mark in graphite on bottom of middle graduated drawer. "J" on proper upper right drawer back, incised with tools and oriented backwards. Chest 1133.2: "C" inscribed in crayon upper rear case rail interior surface. " L" in brownish crayon on proper right upper drawer blade. "R" on opposite side on drawer blade.
Accessories/Hardware
Proper right drawer with single tenon lock. Proper upper left drawer with double tenon lock. Pulls secured with round head slotted screws and washers. Wrought nails for nailing bottoms (one in upper drawer 1 7/6" long).
Condition
Extensive losses to veneer throughout case exteriors. Chest 1133.1: Proper left rear of case has come loose from base, unstable. Consistent insect damage to drawer bottom of lower drawer. Some drawer glue blocks missing. Chest 1133.2: Proper left front column has come loose from base, unstable. Consistent insect damage to drawer bottom of lower drawer.

Description
Pair of two chests of drawers. Projecting upper section with two drawers over case of three graduate drawers all veneered with stencils of Grecian anthemions on lower drawers, and upper drawers framed by stencil with elongated double scrolls. Drawers all set into case and are flush. On chest 1133.1, upper drawers of case have bottoms cut from same board. Lower case drawers flanked by columns upon plinth with recessed center ornamented with gadrooned molding with motif of three leaves under small arch at center. Case rests upon muscular hairy paw front feet draped with leaves above, and simple cone and ball turned feet at rear. Top made of two walnut boards veneered with mahogany secured by large screws driven through uppermost case rail. Pine board underneath laid perpendicular to top for added support. Rear stiles of poplar, front stiles of pine. Sides of case paneled with mahogany panel, rails and stiles all unfinished on interior surface (in some areas outer layers of tree bark visible). Back boards are all laid with grain horizontally: top board is pine; lower three boards are tulip poplar; planing marks visible and back has been stained. Three rails in sides of case are pine, tenoned into front and rear stile with strip of pine for drawer runner nailed to interior surface. Drawer blade and divider of upper drawer section pine faced with mahogany. Veneer all over approximately 1/16" thick. No dustboards. Case bottom of tulip poplar laid on ring porous hardwood plinth (possibly ash or chestnut). Dovetailed drawers with very fine, narrow triangular pins. Drawer fronts of pine veneered with mahogany and stenciled with yellow paint with classical motifs; interior of drawer fronts coated with reddish wash; secondary woods throughout are tulip poplar. Drawers with single board bottom (chest 1132.2 has planing marks on the bottom of its drawers) laid into grooves on drawer sides, which slide into groove in front; bottom nailed through to underside of back. Drawers slide on bottoms of drawer side panels with wedge-shape glue blocks added later at rear. Drawer stock flat on upper edge with uniformly 1" thick fronts, 5/16" thick sides and 11/16" thick bottoms. Turned walnut flattened drawer pulls.

Has been at several properties in Natchez, Mississippi: first at Arlington, then moved to Auburn, then to current owners. Believed to have originally belonged to the Duncan Family.
