Description
Set of six kidney-shaped side chairs. Open backs supported by C-scrolls with trapezoidal serpentine front seat and slender cabriole legs ending in small upturned volutes. Rear legs are continuous stiles square in section with downturned bottom part of leg. Above seat, stile is built up with additional blocks of cherry then carved to create bottom section of back. Front rail with small carved shell in center. Stay rail with carved cabochon in center likely joins to stiles with dowel or tenon. Crest rail is single carved section that likely dowels into tops of composite stile. Front stiles likely receive tenon from side seat rails (possibly ash) which are veneered. At rear, rails likely dowel or tenon into rear stiles. Rear seat rail also tenons into rear stiles. Rails not flush to legs. No pins present. Upholstery completely conceals spring upholstered seats.
