Upholstery
Upholstery replaced. Green and silvery yellow complex woven silk (possibly brocatelle) with matching silk gimp.
Marks/Inscription/Labels
"I" is incised on bottom of left seat, which matches the incised "I" on planks of left side of sofa. "III" is incised on underside of plank in center. "II" is incised on underside of plank at right. "P" written in graphite on various locations under the sofa.
Accessories/Hardware
Slotted steel screws.
Condition
Overall good condition.

Description
Sofa with two independent revolving seats that flank center tufted section all resting on six feet. Base of sofa has veneered band of walnut. Sofa made of two serpentine planks of tulip poplar joined along centers by tenoned boards of pine and chestnut. Either side which supports seat has chestnut plank in center. Chestnut bored through to receive dowels of ring-porous hardwood (possibly ash, hickory, or maple) that protrude from seat bottoms. Base of dowel pierced by chestnut pegs to secure seats. Inserted into planks of sofa are three rectangular iron housings which hold steel wheels like casters (possibly with ball bearings). Chestnut plank bottoms of seats roll against these casters (possibly bearings) to swivel. Legs turned and carved on casters. Feet likely doweled into plank base. Open-back seats with upholstered arms that dowel into serpentine walnut sides. Arms upholstered with bearded dolphin terminals likely receive dowels of arm supports. Serpentine stiles likely dowel or tenon into single solid carved crest above. Seat frame construction concealed by upholstery.
