Marks/Inscription/Labels
Drawers inscribed on underside in graphite with numbers (numbers do not repeat interior rails of drawer sections). Highest number is 14.
Accessories/Hardware
First cabinet (1115.1) has brass hinges, key holes, and double-tenon brass locks on doors in lower section. Two upper proper left drawers with double-tenon locks, otherwise single tenon throughout. Upper proper right two drawers with round brass escutcheons with fine beaded edge. Second cabinet (1115.2) has brass hinges, key holes, brass hook attached to interior of lower left cabinet to secure proper right door. Brass tenon latch on interior of door below slides into upper rail of case frame.
Condition
Overall good condition. According to curator, bookcases have been conserved. Proper left cabinet has had modern drawer on plastic runners added on uppermost shelf. Proper left door of left lower cabinet is missing. Proper right cabinet door missing lock.

Description
Two cabinets or bookcases, the second of which (CIS-2013-1115.2) is L-shaped. First cabinet (1115.1) with two glazed doors enclosing six tulip poplar shelves with solid doors below. Three-quarters of cabinet is glazed, and is set back on case below, leaving room for doors to swing open. Massive, mitred stepped cornice with ogee molding projects almost one foot beyond profile of cabinet below. Mullions intersect to create lancet-like tracery above. Case of walnut with pine drawer fronts (stained hue to match walnut), tulip poplar secondary wood throughout. Drawer dividers and rails pine stained to match walnut. Doors in lower section have mortise and tenon frames in which float pine panels with large sections of walnut burl veneer (pine painted on reverse). Proper left door has vertical molding strip screwed to surface. Configuration of lower section is three rows of four drawers (graduated) over two longer drawers, all with turned pulls (14 drawers total). Dovetailed drawers have hand-planed bottoms beveled that slide into rabbeted sides and front. Backs of drawers uniformly 5/16" lower than rest of sides and front. Rear of bottom nailed through rear of drawer twice with small iron nails. Drawers set into front of case, sit flush. Fronts are uniformly 15/16" wide; sides 1/2" wide throughout. Poplar drawer supports (with large rabbet) further supported by pine blocks glued into sides of case. Two large pine boards run length of underside of walnut case top, dovetail into sides; small width of walnut rests above pine boards, reinforce under bookcase section. Back boards of case are vertical boards of tulip poplar. Proper right side of case stained with wash, but unfinished where not seen. Proper right side consists of two boards in lower case, single board in upper case. Feet are composites of walnut and pine blocks faced with large walnut brackets with undulating profile and prominent profiles of volutes. Case if further supported by independent blocks within depth of case under bottom boards. Second cabinet is L-shaped with glazed doors enclosing shelves above and cabinet with doors enclosing shelves below. Interior of cabinet section on both sides fitted with saw-tooth walnut strips at front and rear of case with walnut shelf supports nailed to sides, otherwise two shelves adjustable. Two shelves of wide tulip poplar boards with beaded walnut facing. Feet are composites of walnut and pine blocks faced with large walnut brackets with undulating profile and prominent profiles of volutes. Case is further supported by independent blocks within depth of case under bottom boards.
