5" x 4" cased ferrotype photograph in sepia tones illustrating man and woman seated. Man sits sideways in a sidechair with turned legs, while woman sits in an armchair with openwork cresting visible over her shoulder. Each is dressed in fine clothes. The man is wearing trousers with vest, matching jacket, shirt with collar folded over a bowtie. Woman wearing a dark-colored dress with full skirt of reflective material (possibly a taffeta); has very large sleeves folded back to reveal lining of contrasting color, as well as full sleeves of an underdress. Lacy, fingerless gloves cover her hands. She also wears a square collar flat against the bodice of her dress, adorned with a large oval broach at her throat (possibly a carved cameo). Hair is swept back from her face, possibly secured by a black netted cap that also contains her hair that falls against the back of her collar. The man's hair is parted on the left side, and sweeps across the crown. They are against a plain ground. Case is made of two boards framed by splints of unidentified hardwood mitred and glued, covered in embossed leather with urn of grapes and vines in a central medallion framed by elaborate scrolling and foliate ornament. Stamped gilt borders on interior and exterior of case. Case containing ferrotype is sandwich of multiple layers of photographic surface, stamped metal preserver, stamped metal border, framed by red leather.
