Description
Three-quarter length double portrait of Sarah (proper-right) and Sally (proper-left) Toney. Both girls wear white dresses that widen at the waist, and which are secured at the shoulder by tied pink ribbons. Both girls have rosy cheeks, and wear their hair split from the center and tucked behind their ears. Sarah holds one of a series of likely hand-colored engravings or perhaps sketches, the rest of which rest on a baluster turned stand or tilt-top table. Sally gestures to the print of a sleeping child and cat with her left hand. Background is a solid brown. Simple frame (dating to the second half of the nineteenth century and likely not original) joined at corners with a quarter round applied to the edges and half round fillet molding near image opening. Frame has been gilded (possibly bronze powder or paint).
