Description
Tall, rectilinear, straight back side chair with block and turned legs with shaped stiles of maple or alder (with baluster and trumpet or cup-like turning) connected by front, medial, and side baluster, shaped and turned stretchers; plain turned stretcher at lower rear. Rear stiles in two parts: upper section cants back and is shaped and turned, joining block in seat with a dowel; bottom section is separately turned and shaped and also doweled into block. This central block in seat also receives seat rails on sides and back likely via tenon joint. Turning profile on left is clockwise; on right, counterclockwise. Panel back tenoned into stay rail and elaborately carved walnut crest, which tenons into blocks of stiles above and below. Florid, deep foliate scroll and shell carving on walnut crest and perimeter of back. Joinery appears to be cut by hand, with scribe lines visible on blocks to position cuts of mortise on rear stiles where stretchers connect. Secondary woods of seat frame obscured by upholstery. Feet are original. Spring-upholstered seat with modern cover.
