Condition
Overall fair condition. Fluorescence is green suggesting natural resin varnish. Small loss of paint in proper lower right corner. Lack of fluorescence in area of eyes and ear suggests area was retouched and revarnished earlier. Stretcher marks visible in raking light. Some cupping across face. Gesso/composite in surprisingly good condition. Little to no loss, or has been repaired by a conservator. Gold leaf on concave interior largely original, with some possible in-fill. Some grime on the same, at upper proper-left hand corner, on proper-left hand side halfway down and along edge at upper proper-right hand side.

Description
Three-quarter length portrait of a man seated in a red upholstered side chair. Sitter wears a white high-collared undershirt and a white waistcoat underneath a black coat and matching cravat. A key fob and a seal with a green gemstone hang from the bottom-most button of the waistcoat, and sitter holds a piece of paper in his right hand. Proper-left of the sitter is a table on which rest several pieces of paper, a leather-bound book with a gilded spine and an metal (brass and silver) inkwell. Frame possibly a hardwood, likely mitred at the corners. Concave quarter round interior with gold leaf capped by a probable gesso or composite; method of attachment unknown. Gesso/composite figured into repeating rocaille patterns of flanking C-scrolls adjoining over-arching figural scrolls and a small, five-pedaled flower. Void spaces filled with more flourished elements, all over a crosshatched ground. Gesso/composite likely finished with bronze powder.
