Marks/Inscription/Labels
"Dutchess of Portsmouth / mistress of Charles II - / this painting from Stratford Hall" on adhesive label on back of canvas.
Condition
Overall fair condition. Possible damage at bottom right-hand corner of canvas, minimal fluoresence indicates a repair. Top of the canvas overpainted with an acrylic. Infill at proper-right eye, proper-right side of the lips and chest. Frame regilded. Some gilding missing at the edges at corners of the frame.

Description
Three-quarter potrait of a woman set in an oval. Sitter wears her hair in curls that fall to the nape of the neck. Sitter dressed in a reddish-brown dress pinned at the proper-left shoulder, with a white gown underneath and a string of pearls around her neck. Subject's eyes are slightly offset, depth disturbed by an elongated nose. Canvas is on a conifer (possibly pine) stretcher with a medial brace and nailed together at corners. Water leaf and leaf and dart patterned composite ornament applied to each corner of coved frame. Exterior edges of the frame bear two composite flower and foliate applied elements each.
