Upholstery
Replacement pink cotton damask woven upholstery with silk rope edging around perimeter of cushion, trimmed in silk gimp of two contrasting shades of pink that conforms tightly to undulation of skirt, seat, and back. Spring upholstered seats enclosed in webbing (possibly woven jute), then covered with a black woven exterior show cloth tacked to beech seat frame. Surface Treatments
First received natural resin finish; later varnish over top; finish history is intact [Confirmed under UV light by Greg Landrey, Winterthur Museum, July 10, 2013].
Condition
Overall fair condition. Joints of veneer dry. Minor losses throughout. Proper right spur and volute missing. Loss to end of proper left side rail. Major repair to proper right section of cresting (visible at rear): splined through cresting to make joint whole and then glued. Possibly metal plate once laid over this join. Has six holes in diamond pattern. Repair to proper right rear of stile: loss at corner of joint with diamond-shaped fill. Crack in upper section of proper left front leg.

Description
Oval panel back chair with elaborate, deeply carved solid rosewood back frame and cresting with rosewood-faced beech seat frame below. Upper third of chair frame and back panel are single piece of solid rosewood doweled into continuous rear stiles. Stay rail tenons into rear legs, secured by two very small round pins inserted into a section of carved detail. Pins are parallel to one another. Additional carved ornament doweled into these sections of frame. Side rails of seat dowel into front legs, tenon into rear legs. Legs slightly cabriole in shape with carved volute spurs at rear, and similar volutes in relief at the toe. Rear legs are round in section, curve downward from back with slight kick outward, ending in a stump foot with a slight swell where the leg tapers, hoof-like. Seat is deeply serpentine with center projecting forward, and lower to frame flower in C-scroll cartouche. Ornament repeats that of CIS-2013-1021.
