Upholstery
Replaced upholstery. Loose, red synthetic upholstery in imitation of leather covers seat that has tangible hard, rolled edge at front. Arm has hard foundation under upholstery that has been regularly folded and pulled under, then secured by many brass nail-head upholstery tacks. This treatment of tacking is repeated on seat; underside of seat has tangible springs covered in woven jute or hemp tacked to seat frame underside with small iron nails.

Iron springs and upholstery tacks. Brass upholstery tacks (possibly replaced).
Condition
Overall excellent condition. Small loss to proper-left lion's head over right eye. Minor scratches to front seat rail.

Description
Chair with wide, heavy circular seat with confronted, intertwined dolphins making openwork back support. Tails of dolphins raise and undulate to create continuous back that dowels into tops of front stiles with large, carved open-mouthed lions. Seat rails and side rails tenon or dowel into legs (joinery concealed). Front legs end in lion paw feet with red talons. Lions' tongues are painted red. Cabriole rear legs that end in underturned foot also hold tenon from seat rail. Back splat and arms made up of six panels of wood. Arms, body, and upper section of large floral scrolls connected by dowels or tenons; 3/4 of dolphin bodies and heads are two carved pieces joined to the upper section; each are joined to a section of seat below. Red synthetic upholstery.

Provenance
Descended in Shields family of Natchez, Mississippi. It is not known if these chairs were owned by Agnes Somerville Shields. According to family documentation, the mate to this chair was in Windsor Lodge, Natchez, Mississippi. Period photographs in the current owner's possession document this chair at Lansdowne at one point, and the other at a log cabin structure identified as Windsor Lodge.
