Upholstery
Cut-cotton velvet (likely original) upholstered foot rest with silk maize-yellow gimp secured with iron upholstery tacks (rusted). Velvet now blackened but once golden yellow in area visible under gimp that has pulled away. Work basket of woven cotton and silk beige damask gathered around bottom to make pleats and tacked with gimp to match foot rest. Upholstery tacks here are very rusted. This is possibly the original fabric. Green baize glued to interior of desk surface.
Marks/Inscription/Labels
Matching graphite mark on drawer bottom and drawer back. Small vertical incised mark on underside of drawer front, but likely does not correspond to a numerical system.
Accessories/Hardware
Brass hinges, iron upholstery tacks, original brass locks (no visible manufacturer's marks). Ceramic (possibly plastic) casters are likely replaced.
Inlays/Veneers
Veneers applied to exterior and interior surfaces as noted in description.

Overall fair condition. Repair to proper left front knee and lower section of leg. Section of veneer over applied bracket missing. Various small losses to corners of applied bosses, cracks in front and rear fretwork along skirt.

Description
Table consisting of rectangular case with heavy, sarcophagus-like lid consisting of mahogany board with stepped walnut planks framing central plank of highly figured, book-matched European walnut in imitation of tortoiseshell. Case contains three compartments: when top is lifted, long interior well with removable dividers of mitred and glued maple is revealed at rear. Well interior entirely veneered with bird's-eye maple; secondary wood not visible. Mitred mahogany top contains mirror within thickness. Below is bird's-eye maple veneered surface, which opens to a sloped green baize-covered writing surface glued to walnut plank framed by mahogany veneers. This lifts and folds open to reveal another interior compartment veneered in bird's-eye maple. Below is one locked dovetailed drawer with solid walnut front and possibly red cedar sides and rear board. Drawer bottom ploughed on perimeter yielding sharply defined profile is slid into rabbet and screwed twice into back panel with slotted steel screws in untouched condition. Bottom board slightly longer than sides to act as a stop. One quarter of drawer is divided horizontally by rounded cedar board tenoned into drawer sides. Below is one board of mitred and glued mahogany panels with two rectangular glue blocks behind which is glued the skirt ornament. In center is an elliptical shaped well to receive fabric work basket. Fabric likely attaches to board with upholstery tacks, which are then covered by gimp. In bottom is a finished plank of mahogany to give basket structure and provide thickness to receive upholstery tacks for gimp around exterior perimeter. This board slides in case on rabbeted walnut runners screwed into drawer supports above by three slotted steel screws. Single plank stretcher with undulating upper and lower profile supports an elliptical, upholstered foot rest that now contains sewing pins. Skirt also has open fretwork ornament that matches the Renaissance Revival-style ornament of the legs.
