Description
Table or desk decorated with papier mâché, paint, gilding, and mother of pearl. The top is applied to the top board and along the sides a molded piece of wood is applied to form an extra stepped molding. The skirt is applied to the step molded board. Two baluster-shaped stiles are joined to a board that stretches the length of the top. Two foot profiles are inserted and secured to the central balusters. A stretcher is mortised and tenoned into the two balusters along the base. The entire piece is covered with black papier mache, gilding, red, blue, light blue, green and white paint in an arabesque design. The top has a central reserve with mother of pearl set into the papier mache in the form of a castle. The reserve is surrounded with mother of pearl floral motifs. On either side of the reserve is an oval with a mother of pearl urn and flowers set into a reserve. The reserves are all mother of pearl. Two floral bouquets are set between the reserves on the front and a cave-like mother of pearl design forms the surround of the entire piece. The top is kidney-shaped.
