Description
Grecian style armoire with projecting cornice. The case is paneled with the back consisting of two vertical backboards joined with tongue and groove. Each section of the back has two stiles and three rails. The panels are dadoed into the rails and the stiles. The sides are mahogany and are paneled with two stiles, two rails and two panels. The panels on the sides are dadoed into the rails and the stiles like the back. The five shelf rests are strips of white pine mitred in the front and nailed to the two side stiles. The doors are constructed in the same fashion with two stiles, two rails and a semi-circular arch with a dadoed in panel. The doors are hung on three original brass hinges. There have been two campaigns of locks on proper left door. The right door has a hook which would have attached to a shelf. There is also a circular eyelet further down on the door which would have been secured by a hook that hung from one of the shelves. The cornice is bolted onto two rails, one on either side. The top of the cornice is a projecting cyma curve set on a segmental arch plinth. The exterior of the front and cornice are mahogany veneered while the two sides are mahoganized wood. The base is bolted to the case sides with a rail set in the interior of the case. The rear bracket feet are set on the side. The front C-scroll feet are laminated wood. The doors have strips of wood applied to create a frame for the semi-circular arched panels. The exterior hardware is original and the proper right piece is missing the very top and bottom of the hardware but the outline is evident. The S-scrolls on the front are applied to the side edges of the doors. Of the three shelves currently in the piece only one is original and it has a large rounded cutout.
