Text, June 15, 1899. A Lynching at Reserve. A St. John Mob Leaves its Stamping Ground. A Negro Hanged who had been Legally Freed. Edward Gray Meets the Fate of his Partner, Morrell. After he had been Liberated the Mob Overtook Him. Gray and Morrell were Accused of Having Committed Burglaries. Published in the Times-Democrat. Edward Gray, a New Orleans African American, who was arrested in St. John Parish almost one year ago and charged with a series of burglaries which had been committed in and around St. John Parish was lynched near Reserve, Louisiana, a station on the Yazoo and Mississippi River Valley Railroad, about 50 miles from New Orleans, after having been released by the authorities because there was no evidence against him, from 1899. His supposed partner in the crimes, Morrell was taken from the Edgard Louisiana jail in November of 1898 and hanged in the courtyard.
