ALL MEDICAL RESEARCH isn't done in secluded laboratories amidst test tubes and formaldehyde. Dr. George W. D. Hamlett has to brave scorching deserts and dodge rattlesnakes to collect the lizards which he is studying at LSU's school of medicine in New Orleans.
In place of a crisp, white uniform, he wears khakis, a sun hat and stout hiking boots on his field trips along the US-Mexican border. To track down the elusive reptiles, he carries a hammer, chisel and handy .22 rifle.
An associate professor of anatomy at LSU, Dr. Hamlett is involved in what may be the greatest lizard hunt of all time. He is out to bring back alive about 200 lizards from their Southwest hideouts. Those that take to the trees get shot.
